October Daily 5: Scuffling in Leaves

When I went out to run some errands just before noon, the wind began to blow, tossing leaves from trees and confounding the maintenance man in the parking lot who attempted to collect the leaves in a tidy pile. Not today.

When leaves collect along the curbs where I walk, I succumb to temptation and scuffle along in them. My husband laughs. There's something about the dry rustle that appeals to the child in me.

This poem, by Rose Fyleman, says it well:

October

The summer is over,

The trees are all bare,

There is mist in the garden

And frost in the air.

The meadows are empty

And gathered the sheaves --

But isn't it lovely

Kicking up leaves!

Is kicking up leaves in your list of autumn delights?

  2. i love the sound of rustling leaves and that is why I don’t like to sweep the deck too often. I like to walk through the leaves.

  3. most definitely. The child is still there. I always love your bounty of maple leaves. Not so many in Jersey. Mainly oaks, sweet chestnuts, poplars and sycamore. I find the oaks the last to change colour. B x

    1. We don't have the red maples that grow further east, but the golden-leafed ones are very pretty, too. Oaks here are some of the last to change.

    1. Raking leaves can be time-consuming, but it's good to be out in the fresh air.

  6. We use to rake the leaves into a pile and then jump in them when we were kids.

  7. Ahhh . . . just caught up on your October posts. What fun to find that you are going to be posting each October day! I have done similar challenges in the past, and find them rewarding. I am usually happy for a break at the end, but find that it is worth the effort along the way.

I love your entry for today. I smiled as I pictured you scuffling through the crunchy leaves, as I have found myself doing the same. They're nearly irresistible, aren't they? Oh, how I love October!

  17. What a darling poem, that playful finish! The only problem with all the Autumn poems and quotations that I love so much this time of year is that I get frustrated because I can't write like that!

  18. Our color is beginning to come on here. I love autumn so much. We've had quite a few grey days, but for me that adds to the autumn mood.
